UN racial discrimination committee questions Cyprus on Turkish language use and citizenship for children of mixed marriages

At the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination's public meeting of 17 April 2026 on Cyprus's twenty-fifth periodic report, a Committee expert said the use of Turkish — an official language of the Republic — remained extremely limited, and experts raised obstacles to citizenship for children of mixed marriages; the delegation defended the Republic's record on both.

Commission's Green Line report for 2023 records Republic of Cyprus application forms provided in Turkish

The European Commission's twentieth report on the Green Line Regulation, published on 4 July 2024, records that Republic of Cyprus authorities have made application forms for roadworthiness certificates, authorisations and professional driving licences available translated into Turkish, free of charge — alongside obstacles the report records as unresolved, including commercial-vehicle documentation and bank account refusals.
